State College Traffic Signal Optimization

The Borough of State College is the host municipality of Penn State University, and sees thousands of pedestrian crossings each day along S.R. 26, a one-way couplet that carries about 30,000 vehicles per day.  Trans Associates was retained to evaluate an optimized signal operation to provide better vehicle progression and better accommodate pedestrians through a leading pedestrian interval (LPI).  Our services included:

  • Data collection.
  • Traffic Engineering Analysis including travel time studies and queue observations.
  • Developing a Synchro/Sim-Traffic Model to replicate existing conditions and develop optimized signal timings.
  • Preparation of revised traffic signal designs to implement the new signal timings and LPI.
